Five Myths and Truths about the Sinuses/ Sinus Discomfort

The sinuses do not have any known functions.

MYTH. The sinuses have a number of roles. For example, they help decrease the weight of the skull, improve our voices, and produce mucus to moisturize and protect the inside of the nose, among other functions.

Research has shown that patients with chronic sinus inflammation were over 50 percent more likely to develop depression or anxiety.

TRUE. I wonder if this has to do with the unpleasant sensation that sinus discomfort causes.Think about this for a moment: If you were packed in a room like a can of sardines, you would probably feel claustrophobic. Sinus inflammation and pressure inflammation are similarly unpleasant and can also make you feel claustrophobic. When the sinuses (air-filled cavities meant to help decrease the skull’s weight) become blocked/ inflamed, they become heavier and make you feel uncomfortable in your own head.

Sinus discomfort can cause a toothache.

TRUE. Your teeth and sinuses are definitely close by in the department of your face. In fact, your sinuses, teeth, and gums all share similar nerves that can send pain signals out. Sometimes, when your sinuses are inflamed, this puts pressure on nerves that can be interpreted as a toothache.

All sinus discomfort is caused by a sinus infection.

FALSE. Thankfully, sinus discomfort does not necessarily mean a sinus infection. For example, when you experience an altitude change due to flying on an airplane or driving high into the mountains, you might feel pressure in your sinuses because of the altitude changes- not a sinus infection. Other causes include the common cold, flu, and allergies.

Aliens also get sinus infections. ?! False? True? Comment below!
